'In May 1852 the 20-year-old Irishman William Jones St John was stationed at Bloemfontein as lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. Twenty months later he died there of dysentery, but in the single volume of his diary which has survived, he left a vivid picture of life in this small and isolated garrison town during the final months of British occupation, and specifically in the limited world of the officers, with its military routine, boredom, dinners, billiards and hunting expeditions. Occasional greater excitements included the campaign against the Basotho in which St John participated, culminating in the battle of Berea, and a trip to the Drakensberg.' Editor's note.
